ABSTRACT

In the alcohol field, there are many different types of intervention which are often grouped loosely under the umbrella term of ‘treatment’. The main work aim of most health and welfare professionals is to assist clients and/or patients experiencing a range of problems from physical or psychological difficulties through to social or legal ones. Treatment is often seen in the active sense of nursing someone or administering medication and yet such actions can only hope to tackle physical problems arising from alcohol misuse and alleviate the unpleasant side-effects of excess consumption. Alcohol education should be seen as an on-going process that is intended to empower people to make their own decisions and choices based on accurate information. Anyone who has ever had an alcoholic drink has got onto the alcohol bus. In the case of alcohol, western society accepts that some people decry alcohol and never drink at all whereas others find it a wonderful beverage and indulge whenever possible.
