ABSTRACT

Over the last 20 years, the debate concerning appropriate behaviour goals for people with alcohol problems has increased. At one stage it was thought that the only way to help people get over such problems and prevent them from recurring was to help them stop drinking altogether. The self-help group, Alcoholics Anonymous has helped hundreds of thousands of people to achieve this goal by encouraging members to take only one day at a time and by offering emotional support through its group structure. Some of the main approaches to alcohol education include the information-giving, shock-horror, affective, situational, behavioural, and harm-minimization approaches.
