ABSTRACT

As was discussed in Chapter 2, despite the shortage of funds, books and other resources, interpreter training centres were successfully launched and developed rapidly with support from all quarters (including the Nationalist Government’s Ministry of Education and Military Affairs Commission, public and private colleges and universities and patriotic youngsters). This became a fascinating tale in the history of translation education in the 20th century in China. What changes did those centres undergo specifically? How were the students trained? In what kind of environment did they hone their interpreting and other skills? To answer those questions and more, this chapter delves into the training (including teachers, students and courses), development, management, teaching methods, characteristics and achievements of the interpreter training centres in Kunming and Chongqing.
