ABSTRACT

In this chapter the authors look at the components that must be established in order to identify students who need additional support regarding behavior. Two focus issues are common area expectations and classroom management. Although this book is not about expectations and management, supporting children cannot be done consistently without these two components solidly in place. Once common area expectations and classroom management are in place, then teachers can more easily identify students who need support and additional strategies. First, early intervention is a concept that is often counterintuitive for educators. Many teachers have been taught to operate under “pick your battles” which can allow small disruptive behaviors to grow. In this chapter early intervention is defined. The language of caring confrontation is included. The purpose is to reduce the resistance of students in order to help them be more coachable. The chapter also includes several resources to assist in the development of expectations and management. Additionally, there are resources to support individual student planning.
