ABSTRACT

One of the critical domains of school psychology practice is consultation. Being a school consultant is an enormous responsibility. Consultants have the potential to impact individuals directly and indirectly as well as to influence systems. Novice consultation is practiced by those such as graduate students prior to receiving consultation training or early in training process, or practitioners with limited to no consultation training. Routine consultation refers to performing consultation without engaging in ongoing self-evaluation, goal-setting, and deliberate practice, the last of which refers to continuously practicing a skill with ongoing assessment and ongoing corrective feedback from a coach or supervisor. The development of competence in professional psychology, and in school psychology as a specialty, has received increased attention over the past several years. Competence is “an individual’s capability and demonstrated ability to understand and do certain tasks in an appropriate and effective manner consistent with expectations for a person qualified by education and training in a particular profession or specialty”.
