ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the Post-Intervention Planning and Closure (PIPC) stage of problem-solving in school consultation. It highlights strategies to facilitate successful case closure, including consideration given to consultation goals both for clients (i.e., students) and consultees. The first consideration regarding closing out the consultation is whether consultation goals are met. Progress monitoring during the previous problem-solving stage served the purpose of formative assessment. In PIPC, the consultant and consultee engage in summative assessment by measuring present levels of performance on target variables compared to long-term goals. Consultees can gain new knowledge, skills, confidence, and objectivity to support their future work. Therefore, assessing the consultee’s professional learning as well as efficacy in implementing the intervention now and in the future are part of the PIPC stage. Since consultation encompasses a data-based problem-solving process, the consultation efforts and their results, positive or not, should be documented.
