ABSTRACT

This chapter comprehensively explores the intricate aspects of the Codevelopment Action Learning (CAL) method’s Step 1: Participant Goals and Topic.

Step 1 has two main objectives. First, to initiate a CAL session, each participant (client, consultants, facilitator) in the group decides on their own goal and/or learning intention for the session. This learning intention provides purpose and meaning for participants. Next, the client briefly presents their topic (prepared in Step 0) and shares what kind of support they want from the group, for the following steps.

Readers will embark on a comprehensive exploration within this chapter, encompassing the facilitation of Step 1, the diverse benefits it offers, a compelling real-life illustration, and an in-depth examination of the theoretical underpinnings of this pivotal stage, all centred around the art of goal setting and active listening.
