ABSTRACT

Today over one hundred thousand men and women are paid to speak into the microphones of approximately twenty thousand radio, television, and cable stations in the United States. The broadcast voice performer is a byproduct of turn of the century technological ingenuity and vision. A text on voice communication was formulated twenty-five hundred years ago in Greece. Through the ages, voice performers have shared a desire to be both intelligible and interesting to the listener. There are many kinds of broadcast voice performers. The term announcer is used primarily to describe anyone who conveys information via the electronic media. The announcing profession is made up of both men and women. The primary responsibility of the broadcast voice performer is to communicate in an intelligible way. The daily duties of a broadcast voice performer depend largely on the position and often vary depending on station and market size.
