ABSTRACT

The television voice performer works in an environment that is at once similar and quite different from that of the radio voice performer. The video voice performer must also deal with lighting, cameras, and crews while broadcasting. The television performer must select clothing carefully, not only to create the most positive image but to avoid conflicting with the inherent technical nature of the medium. Clothing with checks and stripes causes a shimmering and pulsating effect, because television cameras are not able to absorb such patterns. Although television newscasters possess a script, they often read copy from a screen known as a teleprompter located near the lens area of the cameras used during broadcast. Voicing over film or chroma-keyed material during live broadcasts also tests the performer’s ability to effectively direct his message to the home viewer.
