ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an in-depth look at the group known as Involuntary Celibates, or Incels, perhaps the most extreme and violent of the groups of the manosphere. The chapter traces the history of incels from their original iteration of lonely men and women who congregated on a website founded by a Canadian woman to the radically misogynistic male supremacist extremists they have become. This chapter also examines the incel-specific concept known as “the blackpill”, a nihilistic belief that holds that a man's sexual success is almost entirely determined by his physical attractiveness and the only hope men who lack physical perfection have to have sex or romance is the restructuring of society into one of rigid, extreme patriarchy in which women are essentially enslaved to men.
