ABSTRACT
Weber wrote the first one-half of PE (1904–1905) before departing for a ten-week sojourn in the United States and the latter one-half after his return to Heidelberg. Its thesis regarding the significant role played by values in the development of modern capitalism set off an intense debate that has, remarkably, continued to this day. It is certainly the most enduring controversy in the social sciences.
