ABSTRACT

This chapter explores innovation and R&D concepts in the creative industries. It begins by defining key terms such as creativity, innovation and design, highlighting their interconnectedness and importance in the context of the cultural and creative sectors.

The chapter traces innovation theory's evolution from linear models to complex systems approaches. These consider framework conditions, the knowledge and research base, transfer factors and innovation dynamics. This complexity makes it challenging to identify effective interventions for accelerating R&D and economic growth.

The chapter also discusses the types of knowledge crucial for innovation and collaboration in the creative industries between the UK and India, focusing on Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) knowledge and Doing, Using, and Interacting (DUI) knowledge. It highlights the importance of DUI knowledge, which is embodied, tacit and relational, and how it underpins innovation and employment structures in the creative industries. The chapter concludes by examining policymaking in India, particularly federalism and liberalisation, and their impact on the creative industries.
