ABSTRACT

The three preceding chapters were designed to provide a context for the description of an empirical study. Chapter 1 contained the rationale for the study, which it relates to historic and present trends in the conceptualization of problem solving and intelligence more generally. Chapters 2 and 3 provided selective reviews of historical and current psychological research relating to intelligence and problem solving respectively. The emphasis in both chapters was on the evolution of major theoretical view-points, rather than on historical developments.
