ABSTRACT

Learner characteristic data is a key production factor for online learning support services to enhance their productivity in the new era. This chapter focuses on the source and collection of learner characteristic data, and based on the analysis and discussion of online learner characteristics, difficulties and dropout models, proposes a P-K-DSE-E model of six online learner characteristics for the learner characteristic data collection, including psychological characteristics, demographic characteristics, learning environment characteristics, sociological characteristics, cognitive engagement characteristics, emotional engagement characteristics, and behavioural engagement characteristics, which provides a theoretical structure for readers to understand the important variables affecting students’ learning process and performance. After that, based on this learner characteristic model, this chapter composes and discusses the sources of student characteristic data and the corresponding collection and storage techniques, and focuses on the characterization and technical specification of learning experience data.
