ABSTRACT

Earlier the author said that the best results are obtained in the teaching of English if it is treated as an Art rather than an academic subject. This is specially true of the teaching of poetry. One might go further and say that poetry can be approached in much the same way as Art itself. Consider the Art teacher for a moment. His immediate aim is that his pupils should experience the pleasures of self-expression in line and colour. In Art the child must be conscious of a matching up of his powers with his experience or he will quickly become disheartened. What is needed is a medium which will make this possible. Mr. Sayer’s answer is to begin with a large sloping paper, perhaps damp, on which areas of paint are placed and allowed to mix. Thus the child avoids the problem of transferring the image to a blank page.
