Just as the minute-by-minute grid of each program varies, so do the details of production. But there are certain factors common to all productions. There is no way to predict where or when an idea will originate. Bob Geldof was driven by seeing starving people in Africa to conceive and create Live Aid and Sport Aid. Because the United Nations needed to warn of impending environmental disaster, Our Common Future and Earth 90 were born. If there is a test for developing the basis for a globalcast, it would be that the concept of the program “travels”—that it applies not to a single nation or a single continent or a single group of people, but to the world. Geldof reached out to Mike Mitchell at Worldwide Sports and Entertainment, and the Live Aid dream began to take shape.
