ABSTRACT

The Directors Guild of America states that the creative right of the director is that his cut be presented to the producer. The producer has the right to change or reject the director’s cut. The director’s cut sets the pattern and is often close to the final cut. The director is about to screen his “dailies” for the purpose of selecting the best “take” to make up the director’s cut. The sound person, before responding to the director’s request, asks the projectionist if the sound level was altered during the screening of the dailies. The director of photography’s primary responsibility is to give the picture its “look.” The script supervisor is liaison between the director and the editor. The director’s prime directive is to capture and control the mind and spirit of the audience. The director has to give the audience members what they want, even before they know they want it.
