ABSTRACT

Commercial radio’s approach to stories tends to be punchier than the BBC’s, and more colloquial language is used. There are times when even the choice of story will be different. Generally, the BBC tends to carry more foreign stories, while the people concentrate more on domestic stories. There is fierce competition to get a story to air first. If a big story breaks, everyone goes for the best, fastest and most thorough coverage. The most important source of news is the involvement in the community, knowing what is affecting it and what people care about. Journalists build up individual contacts over the years who become valuable sources of news. The diary will also contain reminders of events, anniversaries or updates for running stories, such as the starting date for an inquiry, the resumption of a court case, or the day a group of charity walkers are expected to return. News wires are information services hired out to clients.
