ABSTRACT

The final analysis chapter is the most recent and, arguably, the most important case study of the project. This chapter focuses on the success of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear agreement that marked an unprecedented co-operation between the Western world and Iran on a politically polarised issue. Though many factors played a role in manifesting the conditions for the agreement, concerns of justice are at the centre of this analysis. This case is exceptional for several reasons. Firstly, it emphasises the importance of rhetorical changes in shifts in foreign policy. Secondly, it illustrates that Western and non-Western IR are not necessarily diametrically opposed, as justice is sometimes seen as a motivator in Western scholarship. Finally, this is a case that shows the diplomatic potential for addressing and acknowledging concerns of non-Western identity. Whether intentional or not, the JCPOA addressed some concerns of justice that made it acceptable for Iran to enter into an agreement on a previously intractable issue.
