ABSTRACT

The metanarrative of Progress and Prosperity is predominantly secular, leaving little room for theological musings. Nonetheless, because engagement with the ‘creative humanities’ is essential, this line of speculation is pursued in this chapter. Specifically, ‘pantheism’ is discussed as an introduction to the tension between science and theology, arguing that the latter offers useful insights and is ultimately more useful in terms of resolving the global environmental emergency. The chapter closes with a consideration of Dylan Thomas’s poem ‘Do not go gentle,’ showing how it can help us to learn how to deal with the inevitable loss of our collective naivete and the carefree immaturity that has brought us to the edge of environmental tragedy.
