ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces themes of agency and morality in the context of what appears to be a headlong rush to ecocide. The ensuing discussion of dualism and monism leads to the observation that no definitive conclusion can be reached about the native characteristics of a unitary universe, and therefore that ‘impressions’ are integral to qualitative inquiry. With this in mind, climate change and theology as exemplars of the material and the ideational are broached, setting the stage for a more detailed examination of the problem of reconciliation in subsequent chapters.
