ABSTRACT

The final chapter focuses on the importance of teachers and school leaders responding well to failures. It characterises the importance of ‘intelligent failure’, whereby teachers are supported to identify and learn from setbacks. Moreover, it delves into the challenges associated with using inadequate indicators to gauge learning success accurately.

Crucially, an alternative focus on ‘adaptive teaching’, along with an array of ‘formative assessment’ strategies, are shared to better support learning to increase the likelihood of success. Indeed, formative assessment approaches are described as helping to recognise small failures so that large ones do not happen. It takes teachers to be supported to become ‘adaptive experts’ to be confident in enacting such impactful approaches.

The final section of the chapter makes a compelling case for teachers being given ample support, such as the time, training, and tools, to enable them to succeed. The end of the book is a clarion call urging teachers to persist, embrace the lessons from failure, and to continuously develop their teaching expertise.
