ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the issues surrounding lack of parent advocacy and resources in high-needs schools and how collaborating with RELD families of children with varying exceptionalities and displaying cultural reciprocity can improve outcomes of students. Cultural reciprocity in special education is a process where families and educators examine their own beliefs while respecting one another’s differences and collaborating with each other to help build children’s strengths. At the end of this chapter, a list of free or affordable parent advocacy organizations for RELD families is provided to help educators better serve RELD families of children with special needs.
