ABSTRACT

Identifying and providing guidance regarding every possible hazard the people may face when visiting site is beyond the scope of the guide. Examples of asbestos-containing materials that could pose a hazard include asbestos insulation boards, corrugated roofing panels, pipe lagging and gaskets for electrical or mechanical services installations, sprayed structural or fire-retardant coatings on steelwork. Over the last five years, falls from height have been responsible for 51 % of fatal injuries to workers on construction sites and account for 33% of all main accidents over the last three years. Slips, trips or falls on the same level account for 31 % of work-related injuries in the construction sector. Cramped spaces pose a risk due to their size or the difficulty posed by working within them. Typical examples of a confined space include sewers and storage tanks. However, a confined space is not necessarily enclosed on all sides and may not be small or difficult to work in.
