ABSTRACT

The project that best explains the studio’s ethos is Boombox, which was designed in response to a request from City of Chicago for proposals to incorporate digital advertising into city plazas to generate income for the city. Boombox is one of many community-focused projects that Darnstadt has worked on. The Shed, a nonprofit cultural organisation, is also open to the public both programmatically and physically, exposing new populations to experimental arts, with $10 tickets in every row. A liberal arts program in New Mexico schooled Smoke in ‘the underpinnings of the Western world’, for the most part disseminating the dogma of high modernist design. Smoke advocates a process of land-based learning so that landscape interventions are crafted specifically for each community and place. Smoke always works with a landscape architect so that architecture and landscape design are understood as intertwined.
