ABSTRACT

Chun had the perfect opportunity to interrogate how people experience space in her ‘Dialogue in the Dark’ project. Wise architecture have created a succession of buildings – from domestic architecture to offices and public spaces – that often use texture and perforation to evoke strong emotional responses. The studio’s ethos can be best understood through their redevelopment and historic renovation projects. Tokyo-based Atelier Bow-Wow was set up by Momoyo Kaijima and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto in 1992. Initial outcomes included a fisherman’s school, precipitating population growth, and expanding the scope of the project to provide homes for newcomers as well as relocating locals. Xu’s training developed in an international context, having qualified with a Baccalaureate in Architecture from Tsinghua University, Beijing, and with a Master’s in Architecture and Urban Design from Harvard University. All of DnA’s work can be seen as experiments in hybrid economic formats that operate as exemplary projects to encourage other villages to interpret and imitate them.
