ABSTRACT

An architect from Homs, Syria, Marwa Al-Sabouni is internationally acclaimed for her contribution to architecture through practice, writing and exhibition-making. As reported on international news feeds, 60% of the district had been destroyed by shelling. Since 2009, the Palestinian architect and curator Noura Al Sayeh-Holtrop has been working at the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) as Head of Architectural Affairs – highlighting the importance of heritage and culture, old and new. With women banned from studying architecture in Saudi Arabia in the 1980s and 1990s, Sumaya Dabbagh is one of only a handful of Saudi women running long-established architecture practices in the Gulf. Ghotmeh’s projects vary across scales and geographies – from single objects to museum architecture, and from France to Japan. Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021, as an illustration of resilience in the face of crisis.
