Kenyan architect Tatu Gatere is on a mission ‘to see more women working in every area of the built environment’. The organisation’s data shows that women who complete a four-month course have a five-times greater earning power. Heilman runs a successful practice, Alama Architecture, but it is projects initiated through TAWAH, alongside mentorship and teaching, that absorb most of her time. Although varying vastly in scale and programme, all of Shawl’s buildings share a dedication to creating spaces that respond both to the environment of Ethiopia and how they will be used. Over the past 30 years, Ethiopian architect Rahel Shawl has designed buildings from private homes to hospitals and from shopping malls to breweries all across Ethiopia. Her work also includes numerous embassies and institutions for European and African countries in Addis Ababa.
