ABSTRACT
Australian architect Sophie Dyring, who leads Melbourne-based studio Schored Projects, believes that access to good design is everyone’s right. The studio has created numerous social housing schemes across the state of Victoria. Loata Ho sees complexity as a means through which each project can reflect its context, using local resources, Indigenous, vernacular, traditional design and existing social structures. One of a growing number of women architects who sees building female role models as a professional responsibility, Loata Ho is committed to encouraging more women to have their own practices and ‘stop working for somebody else’. In Rees’ work, visualisation provides an important tool of communication. As with so many architects who are facilitating dialogue between client and community, KTA’s practice of ‘mutual benefit’ models a different kind of design leadership. ‘True design leadership’, Thompson argues, ‘is to accommodate with intent’.
