ABSTRACT

As humans, we seek out incredible views of mountains or oceans, even if it's only on our Instagram feeds or in wildlife documentaries. Coupled with the benefits to our eyes of spending a few minutes looking away from a screen, the value of good views even extends to preventing or relieving headaches. While on most sites we are not able to give views of the Rocky Mountains or the Indian Ocean, in the majority of places it is possible to give people views of green space, water, or at least a tree. Not only do they provide better views, they give us cleaner air and less noise than at street level. Green roofs can improve the insulation of a building, reducing the need for heating and cooling, and can greatly improve biodiversity. This isn't to say that views of the city should not be provided from strategic locations, however, as these can create their own moments of joy.
