ABSTRACT

However, there are many aspects of daily life that impact our psychology which have been designed by other people, and these can affect us either positively or negatively. Research into the psychology of mess has now shown a direct link between untidiness and stress. Perhaps then it is no coincidence that Scandinavian countries, which typically score very highly on happiness indexes, place a lot of value on storage in the home. Modern developers sometimes view storage as a low priority, as it takes up floor area that could be allocated to more economically valuable uses. It is therefore important that designers provide intelligent, integrated and generous storage. However, they have been shown to create a sense of freedom and improve happiness, with some research into prison design even showing that lower ceilings can make people more aggressive so height in internal spaces is worth fighting for in designs wherever possible.
