ABSTRACT

This chapter builds a theoretical framework for how we understand white supremacy, whiteness, and improvisation as an alternative to whiteness. This conceptualization informs the stories and interpretations of transformative critical whiteness pedagogies we share throughout the book. Before assembling this framework, we address contemporary controversies surrounding whiteness work. Specifically, we address a critique that arises from both progressive and conservative traditions—the idea that white people should not talk (or write a book) about race.
