ABSTRACT

The introduction details my educational story and situates race in education. First, I move through critical educational moments to connect to a broader societal narrative and unpack how schools and prisons coalesced during my time as a Black girl, mother, student, and teacher. Next, I identify the historical and political strands within the system, and my story grounds the research scope to understand how stories intersect across time and locations and captures moments of educational harm for Black students. Finally, I introduce the men who inform the stories in this book and conclude the introduction with a discussion about my narrative choices to understand Black experiences in school and society.
