ABSTRACT

This chapter details the men's high school stories. Robert's home life changed when his parents divorced. The new financial hardships forced him into the streets with a new persona that conflicted with teachers. He lost his honor roll status and became involved in the criminal justice system. Warren disengaged from school as his mother battled cancer. He failed classes and was arrested repeatedly. Raheem's high school was a battleground. Confrontations with the school resource officer risked his freedom, and he exited high school and immersed himself in the streets. In this chapter, I look at the teachers’ dispositions toward students and adverse interactions with law enforcement inside and outside the schools. I identify the lack of resources and support available for the young, Black youth and argue that the criminalized conditions pushed these Black males out of school and into the criminal justice system.
