ABSTRACT

In the second narrative reflection, I describe two critical moments when I taught in non-traditional secondary settings. The first was at an alternative high school. I highlight one event where I participated in a weapon search that resulted in a student being expelled and criminally charged. That moment helped to redefine my purpose in education and how I came to see and engage with students. Next, I share a story from the time I taught at a community education center, and one of my students was murdered over the Thanksgiving break. I use both stories to understand how students end up in non-traditional education, discuss what experiences they bring into the classroom, and explain how research is essential for helping teachers better serve their needs. My stories were the catalyst for my next career moves, and I connect Raheem's stories with the experiences I reflect on as a teacher.
