ABSTRACT

The literary process begins with Robinson’s writing as an expression of his identity. A feedback model of the reading and writing of literature thus provides for both the author’s unique expression of self and the reader’s. Any modern criticism requires us to pay close attention to the language. The identity-governing-feedback model lets us visualize how different levels of sophistication in teaching literature correspond to different levels of abstraction in the hypotheses we apply or discuss. The identity-governing-feedback model can be helpful in visualizing other kinds of teaching, as well, because the teaching of anything, particularly at advanced or even secondary levels, mostly follows this pattern. Feminist studies suggest different styles of science from that implied by the separable parts metaphors.
