ABSTRACT

In tragedy, Aristotle said, the Chorus “should be regarded as one of the actors.” The Chorus in Homo Sapiens Rex consists of the environmental scientists and science writers, economists and political theorists, politicians and activists who use the print, electronic, and social media to make their voices heard. According to Nobel Prize winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman: “People tend to assess the importance of issues by the ease with which they are retrieved from memory—and this is largely determined by the extent of coverage in the media. Frequently mentioned topics populate the mind even as others slip away from awareness.” The good news is that the Present-Day Chorus includes environmentally friendly voices as well as environmentally hostile ones. Would that renouncing our hubris were a frequently mentioned topic! It is not.
