ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 shows how the Fuzhou migrants, depending on the strength of the community, complete the process of migration, establishing an ethnic economy in the United States and constructing a transnational community consisting of the migrant community and the emigrant community. It further explores how the institutional continuity and the culture of migrants help to build up a self-rule community and provide public goods for their members. It also raises a question, whether their practices indicate a cultural possibility for construction of civil society in China.
