ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 deals with the cross-linked nature and entrepreneurial spirit of Fuzhounese society. It shows how Fuzhou migrants form a networking society based on traditional rural social ties of kinship, territorial connection and dialect. This chapter explores how premodern social relations help the migrants adapt to the cosmopolitan environment of a highly developed country and how these networks function in the migrant economy and establish institutions of self-rule. Finally, to highlight the Fuzhou migrants’ entrepreneurial spirit, this chapter briefly compares that community with those of Jewish and other Chinese ethnic groups.
