ABSTRACT

This chapter primarily focuses on establishing three primary theoretical and methodological lenses through which the narratives of HMI individuals have been re-storied in this book. It identifies the relevance of the psychiatric rehabilitation process in HMI persons and the role of “recovery” (living a satisfying, hopeful, and contributing life despite having SMI symptoms) and “empowerment” (a community-based process through which one may gain access to material and psychosocial resources that he or she was deprived of) in that context. It also highlights social suffering (suffering inflicted by economic, political, and institutional power processes, and how they influence responses to social problems) as one of the critical challenges for marginalised populations like the HMI.
