ABSTRACT

The new round of technological revolution has a profound impact not only on economic development but also on the process of global urbanization. This chapter discusses how global urbanization is shaped by the new technological revolution. First, industrial transformation or industrialization triggered by technological revolution is the main driver and accelerator of urbanization. Specifically, this “speed-up effect” is more suitable for Asian and African countries where urbanization level is still rather low. Second, the new round of technological revolution will greatly enhance the carrying capacity of metropolitan areas. Urbanization will turn to a high-quality development stage dominated by metropolitan areas and city clusters especially after urbanization reaches 50%. Third, the technological revolution will deepen the division of functions along the inter-city value chain more rapidly. Knowledge-intensive cities and international consumption cities will emerge. Fourth, the technological revolution will accelerate the transformation to a smart, inclusive, and green urban lifestyle. Finally, as the technological revolution further unfolds, it will exert a more profound impact on the internal spatial structure.
