ABSTRACT

Because this book was intended for use as a general text, I have sacrificed more elaborate theoretical exegesis in favour of descriptive and empirical material. This has meant that some scholarly debates are dealt with in a rather abbreviated manner. I have tried, nonetheless, to indicate the main lines of theoretical dispute and to take a clear position where my reading and the evidence cited warranted this. The purpose of this note on further reading is to identify the most important or most contentious authors in the field so as to permit recent students to extend their reading without having to track down too many of the obscure references cited.
