ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly deliniates the intervention frame, processes and outcomes of the interventions during the two and half year period from 2010 to 2013. Based on the baseline survey report, a two-fold action intervention strategy was chalked-out and implemented. On the one hand, the women were provided agricultural skills and knowledge, and simultaneously on the other hand, processes to empower them were initiated. The goal of the empowerment strategy was to enhance the self-esteem and enable them to question the established value system and cultural arrangements. The focus was on collective exploration, reflection and actions. The role of outsiders was considered important but only as facilitators and the means used were education, knowledge, exposure and formation of collectives. The process of collectives started with formation of women farmers’ interest groups of 25 to 30 members each. These concentrated on education and training of farm related functions. Each group identified a lead farmer.
