ABSTRACT

In the third chapter, the author attempts to “modernize” Freud's “Civilization and Its Discontents” in order to understand the contemporary malaise of civilization. The focus is on diagnosing and treating arrogance, drawing inspiration from Bion's critique of arrogance within psychoanalysis, and the cure he proposes. Unlike mere speculation, psychoanalysis aims to translate insights into practical methods of healing. The authors explore the concept of splitting as a source of suffering and seek appropriate technical approaches to its resolution. They suggest that genuine mutual recognition, free of dominance, hierarchy, and judgment, can help restore a unified self. To achieve this, they advocate the development of theoretical and technical tools that promote symmetrical therapeutic relationships that foster care and concrete existential possibilities. Combining speculative thinking with clinical experience, the author seeks a deeper understanding of civilization's malaise and possible solutions.
