ABSTRACT
When London’s hospitals emptied their wards in readiness for mass aerial bombing, Pat’s thyroid operation was indefinitely postponed. The weekend the war began, Pat evacuated to a country cottage with her mother and baby while John attended his first meeting of the Trades Union Congress. When no bombs fell, Pat had her operation and recovered to type John’s first pamphlet concerning the compensation rights of auxiliary firefighters injured at work. It marked the start of their common project, John Horner the public man.
