ABSTRACT

A former communist, Bob Darke, a wartime auxiliary firefighter described in his book, The Communist Technique, how the Party gradually gained control over the FBU while John’s memoir admits that the anti-communist Home Office minister Herbert Morrison warned him about ‘keeping strange company’. When the FBU campaigned in 1943 for Communist Party affiliation to the Labour Party, Morrison successfully argued against it at Labour’s annual conference, attacking the duplicity of delegates of secret communists.
