ABSTRACT

Following the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, the British Communist Party reversed its policy by becoming an enthusiastic supporter of the British government’s war effort. Harry Pollitt returned as the party’s general secretary and led a campaign to open a second front against Germany to relieve the pressure on Russia. John worked closely with Pollitt (the only communist who appears in his memoir) and it may have been then that John (secretly) joined the Communist Party.
