ABSTRACT
Pat and John were separated again when flying bombs fell on London and she evacuated to Birmingham where their younger daughter was born. In her absence John had to choose whether to stand for Parliament as a Labour member in the 1945 election or to stick to the FBU. It may have been Pollitt who decided that a communist trade union leader was more useful to the Party than an undercover communist back-bencher.
