ABSTRACT
In November 1955, the Communist Party leadership instructed John to provide an alibi for an FBU colleague whom John erroneously suspected of having murdered his wife. It triggered a disillusion with the Party, intensified by Khrushchev’s secret speech about Stalin that resulted in John experiencing a five-month breakdown with severe depression.
