ABSTRACT

The use of the purposeful patterns indicates to essay scorers that a student has control of language and uses it to their advantage——to create voice and emotion, and to persuade. The standards suggest students have command of the language. Students compare the imitation, which features absolute phrases with present participles, to the model, which features absolute phrases with past participles and adjectives. The conversations can easily move to analysis of and connections to theme or character. A good way to help students understand the effect of fragments is to have them consider how the text would flow if they corrected the fragments and nestled them together in a sentence. Students take a sentence from their writing and add fragments after it to bring it to life.
